(Re-read Tom Critchlow’s original post and I think I can now see where you’re both getting at. It _is_ very easy to build a front end for a JSON “API.” And OPML comes with built-in discovery, while XLST—didn’t think I’d ever see that “come back”!—acts as your de facto “web front end.”)
